CHAPTER 19

Overview

Avery’s research into the will’s four nonprofits suggests they may encode a story about Toby involving addiction treatment and memory loss. Her discoveries shift her theory: Harry may be Toby without knowing it, which would mean he did not necessarily deceive her.

Nan confirms Toby was sent to Camden House and links that period to the summer of the fire, but Mr. Laughlin cuts the conversation short. His decision to brick up Toby’s wing again physically blocks Avery’s access to one of her most important sources of clues.

Summary

On the drive back to Hawthorne House, Avery, Jameson, and Xander research the four unfamiliar nonprofits from Tobias Hawthorne and Alice Hawthorne’s disinheriting will. Avery confirms that the Allport Institute, Camden House, Colin’s Way, and the Rockaway Watch Society are real organizations, not invented puzzle pieces.

Avery focuses first on the Allport Institute, a Swiss neuroscience facility studying memory, dementia, Alzheimer’s, amnesia, and short-term memory loss. She then searches the Latin phrase Grayson said to Jameson and realizes it means either “It is one of us. We protect it” or “She is one of us. We protect her,” making Avery understand that the Hawthorne brothers may now see her as one of their own.

Avery next researches Camden House, an in-patient rehabilitation center for substance abuse and addiction. Remembering the pills and powder found in Toby’s room, Avery wonders whether Tobias Hawthorne used the charity list to tell a story about Toby—perhaps addiction, treatment, and memory loss.

At Hawthorne House, Jameson abruptly leaves, while Xander greets Nan. Nan dismisses Xander and orders Avery to walk with her in the garden. Nan demands to know what Avery has done to find Toby, and Avery admits she is trying but believes Toby may not want to be found. The memory-research clue then leads Avery to a new possibility: if Harry is Toby, perhaps Harry never lied because he does not remember being Toby Hawthorne.

Avery asks Nan about Camden House. Nan confirms Toby was sent there but insists Toby was not an addict, only “confused,” and says Toby was angry before and after his stay during the summer of the fire. Before Nan can say more, Mr. Laughlin interrupts, warns that the subject is unhealthy for Nan, and pointedly tells Avery that he repaired an older wing of the House because neglected places can hurt people. Avery checks inside and discovers that Toby’s wing has been bricked up again.

Groundskeeper who interrupts Avery and Nan, then reveals Toby’s wing has been repaired and bricked up.
  • Jameson Hawthorne
Researches on the drive, then abruptly leaves Avery and Xander upon returning to Hawthorne House.

Researches with Avery, jokes affectionately with Nan, then leaves Avery to speak with her.
  • Grayson Hawthorne
Absent but important; his Latin exchange and identified charities guide Avery’s research.
