CHAPTER 42
Overview
Grayson teaches Avery to ski at True North, but the outing becomes a serious conversation about Sheffield, Skye, Toby, and the damage caused by the Hawthorne family. Grayson admits his fear that the family breaks people and that Avery may be in danger because Tobias put Avery into their world.
Instead of continuing to avoid Avery, Grayson chooses to help Avery investigate Toby, though Grayson defines the relationship as friendship. The chapter ends with paparazzi appearing on the mountain, threatening Avery and Grayson's privacy at a vulnerable moment.
Summary
At True North, Avery goes skiing with Grayson while Oren and another security guard follow. Grayson teaches Avery the basics, and though Avery insists Grayson does not have to help her, Grayson says no one would believe Avery had chickened out.
As Avery struggles on the private trail, Grayson retrieves Avery's lost ski and admits Avery was right that Grayson had been avoiding her. Grayson says he promised to teach Avery what Avery needs to know to live her new life, starting with skiing.
On the ski lift, Avery tells Grayson that Avery overheard most of Grayson’s conversation with Sheffield. Grayson reflects on Tobias Hawthorne disinheriting his children, Toby possibly setting the fire, and Skye seeking out Sheffield Grayson, whose resentment toward the Hawthornes may have led to Grayson’s conception. Grayson wonders whether Grayson, rather than Toby, was the final reason Tobias disinherited the family, but Avery insists Grayson should not feel guilty and reminds Grayson that Tobias loved Grayson and Grayson's brothers.
Grayson then connects the family’s past to one of Tobias’s old puzzle lessons involving Jameson’s knife and a glass ballerina that had to be shattered. Grayson explains that Tobias taught the boys that power and money break things and people. Grayson now believes the Hawthorne family itself breaks people, including Toby, the fire victims, Emily, and possibly Avery.
Avery rejects the idea that Avery is fragile, telling Grayson that Avery is not the glass ballerina and will not shatter. Grayson says Grayson knows Avery cannot stop investigating Toby and commits to helping Avery, but only as Avery's friend. Avery accepts the label, gets off the lift successfully on her own, turns back to gloat, and sees paparazzi watching them.
