CHAPTER 80
Overview
Avery confronts the contradiction between every Toby-related clue and the DNA proof that Ricky is her father, leaving the central mystery unresolved rather than solved. Jameson’s return shifts their relationship from game-playing to emotional honesty as Jameson admits Avery matters and gives Avery the recovered disk. The chapter reframes the hunt: Toby is not Avery’s father, but Toby is still out there, and the disk becomes the next clue.
Summary
Avery studies her birth certificate and cannot reconcile the evidence. Toby sought her out after Hannah’s death, signed the birth certificate, loved Hannah, and seemed tied to Tobias Hawthorne’s decision to leave Avery the fortune, yet the DNA test says Ricky Grambs is Avery’s father.
Jameson enters Avery’s room with a riddle, and Avery answers that the missing word is "beside." His presence triggers Avery’s memory of a coma-like vision in which she stood by the ocean and heard Jameson’s voice. Jameson reveals that he came to see Avery every day while she was unconscious.
Jameson drops his usual deflection and tells Avery she is not a prize, puzzle, riddle, or clue. He says Avery and Jameson are alike, and proves it by revealing that Jameson returned to the bomb site to recover the small metal disk because Jameson knew Avery would have done the same.
Jameson gives Avery the disk, admitting that Jameson has not figured out what it is because Jameson was waiting for Avery. The moment becomes intimate, but Jameson does not pressure Avery; instead, Jameson tells Avery that when Avery is ready, Avery can flip the disk like a coin: heads means Jameson kisses Avery, tails means Avery kisses Jameson.
Avery turns back to the larger mystery and says aloud that Toby was not, and is not, Avery’s father. That means Toby Hawthorne is still alive somewhere and still hiding. Jameson responds to the unresolved mystery with renewed excitement: the game is on.
