CHAPTER 21
Overview
Oren warns Avery that investigating Toby’s survival could make Avery a deadly target if the Hawthorne will becomes vulnerable to challenge. Despite the warning and increased security, Avery continues following Tobias’s clues and links the charities to Toby, the island fire, and the victims. Her research ends with a major revelation: Sheffield Grayson was Colin Anders Wright’s uncle, connecting Grayson’s family to one of the fire’s dead.
Summary
After the others leave Avery’s room, Oren tells Avery that her security protocols will change because of the bloody heart left for her. Before discussing that, Oren confronts Avery about upsetting the Laughlins by investigating Toby’s old wing. Avery admits that Avery, Jameson, and Xander were there, and Oren makes clear that he knows they are searching because they believe Tobias Hawthorne II is alive.
Oren explains his loyalty to Tobias Hawthorne by revealing that he was once career military and lost everyone in his unit in an unspecified incident. Tobias later found Oren when Oren was in a terrible state and gave Oren purpose again. Because Tobias’s last request was for Oren to protect Avery, Oren warns that he will do whatever is necessary to keep Avery safe.
Avery insists that Toby is alive, but Oren stops Avery before Avery can say more. When Avery mentions Grayson’s concern that news of Toby’s survival could have serious consequences, Oren says the consequences could be deadly. Oren explains that the Hawthorne family currently has little reason to kill Avery because Tobias structured the will to make Avery’s survival in their interest, but if another heir exists and the will can be challenged, Avery could become much less safe. Oren orders Avery to lie low and stop investigating with the Hawthorne boys.
That night, with security stationed outside Avery’s door, Avery continues researching the organizations tied to Tobias’s old will. Avery connects the Allport Institute to memory research, Camden House to addiction treatment and Toby’s past, and Rockaway Watch to the coastal town across from Hawthorne Island where Kaylie Rooney came from. These details make Avery suspect that Toby’s addiction, the island fire, and possible memory loss may all be part of the same hidden story.
Avery then researches Colin’s Way, the last charity on Grayson’s list. The charity was founded in memory of Colin Anders Wright, another young person who died on Hawthorne Island twenty years earlier, and it must have been created quickly enough to appear in Tobias Hawthorne’s twenty-year-old will. Avery finds an early press conference video and watches Colin’s uncle announce the charity with Colin’s mother and siblings nearby.
The man’s voice and ice-blue-gray eyes seem disturbingly familiar to Avery. When reporters call out to him as Mr. Grayson, Avery reads the ticker and realizes Colin Anders Wright’s uncle is Sheffield Grayson, tying Grayson’s father directly to one of the victims of the Hawthorne Island fire.
