CHAPTER 17
Overview
Avery, Jameson, and Xander bring the old will’s charity list to Grayson, hoping his knowledge of the Hawthorne Foundation will reveal the next clue. Jameson uses a childhood ritual to make Grayson listen, but the move revives a brotherly rule that may lead to a physical confrontation. The chapter shifts the investigation toward Grayson while intensifying the tense, competitive dynamic among the Hawthorne brothers.
Summary
Avery returns to the Hawthorne Foundation, where the silver-gray walls and Grayson’s black-and-white photographs make the space feel strongly tied to him. Jameson and Xander accompany Avery, serving as a buffer because Avery’s dynamic with Grayson remains tense.
When Grayson arrives, Jameson invokes an old Hawthorne-brother ritual called On Spake. Grayson explains that the phrase is an anagram for “no speak,” meaning Grayson must remain silent while Jameson delivers his message. Xander enthusiastically supports the ritual, while Avery is baffled by the brothers’ strange childhood rules.
Jameson uses the enforced silence to tell Grayson that Avery, Jameson, and Xander examined Tobias Hawthorne’s will from after Toby’s presumed death. Jameson admits Grayson thought requesting the will was a bad idea, then explains that the important discovery was a list of charities. The group needs Grayson to study the list and see whether anything stands out.
After Jameson ends On Spake, Grayson begins preparing for the ritual’s apparent consequence: Taeb Nwod, or “beatdown.” Avery tries to stop the situation from escalating, but Jameson says it is not his choice. Grayson then tells Avery that Grayson would prefer she wait outside, leaving the brothers’ confrontation unresolved.
