At the bricked-up entrance, Avery finds Xander preparing to break through the wall with a sledgehammer. Avery confronts Xander with what Avery has pieced together: Xander avoided answering questions about Toby, Xander was involved in something with Rebecca and Thea at lunch, and Xander’s uncle is alive.

Jameson arrives before Xander can fully respond, and Jameson immediately wants in on the effort to open the wall. Xander resists, showing an uncharacteristic intensity and possessiveness over both the sledgehammer and the lead. To stop the brothers from escalating into a physical contest, Avery reveals that Avery knew Toby after Avery’s mother died and explains the connection.

Xander realizes that Avery was not merely a player in Tobias Hawthorne’s last game for Grayson and Jameson. Avery concludes that Tobias Hawthorne also left Xander a game: Xander’s letter congratulated Xander for helping his brothers finish their puzzle, but when submerged in water, Tobias’s signature transformed into the instruction to “Find Tobias Hawthorne the Second.”

The revelation proves that Tobias Hawthorne knew Toby was alive. Xander considers abandoning the sledgehammer plan if Avery has Toby’s location, but Avery explains that Avery tried to get money to Toby through Alisa after inheriting and that Toby had already disappeared. With no clear way to find Toby, Xander decides to continue opening the sealed wing and raises the sledgehammer again.
