CHAPTER 74

Overview

Avery defies safety concerns and travels to the Oregon coast to meet Jackson Currie, who confirms that Hannah cared for Toby after the Hawthorne Island fire and fell in love with him while Toby was known as Harry. Jackson’s account and Toby’s farewell letter reveal why Toby left: guilt over the deaths, fear of Tobias Hawthorne’s influence, and a desire to spare Hannah further pain.

The chapter strengthens Avery’s belief that Harry and Toby are the same person and deepens the mystery of whether Toby later reconnected with Hannah and fathered Avery. Jackson’s final gift—postcards Hannah sent for Harry over the years—opens a new path into Hannah and Toby’s hidden history.

Summary

Oren and Alisa oppose Avery’s plan to visit Hawthorne Island, but Avery refuses to stop. Oren agrees to arrange security only for Avery, ruling out Xander, Jameson, and the others because the trip is too dangerous. Avery notices that Jameson, unusually, does not fight to come along, which deepens Avery’s unease about the shifting triangle between Avery, Jameson, and Grayson.

After flying from Texas to the Oregon coast, Avery reaches Jackson Currie’s door near dusk with Oren and Grayson. Grayson warns that Jackson will not cooperate if Avery arrives surrounded by guards, so Oren’s team forms a perimeter. Avery knocks and identifies herself as Hannah’s daughter, invoking Toby’s postcards, Hannah’s help, and the love between Hannah and Toby; Jackson finally opens the door and says that Hannah’s family always finds things out.

Jackson allows Avery inside but insists that Grayson stay outside, while Oren remains in the doorway with strict safety limits. Jackson tells Avery that Hannah was in nursing school, treated Jackson’s injuries, and helped care for Toby after Jackson pulled him from the water. Jackson also reveals that Hannah loved her sister Kaylie and had planned to get Kaylie away from the Rooneys.

Avery learns that Toby stayed with Jackson for about three months while recovering, and that Hannah and Toby fell in love during that time. When Toby’s memory returned, Toby and Hannah fought; Toby nearly killed himself, wanted to turn himself in, and was stopped by Hannah, partly because the person blamed for Kaylie Rooney’s death would not survive local jail. Hannah wanted to run away with Toby, but Toby refused because Toby believed loving him would keep hurting Hannah.

Jackson gives Avery a linen-wrapped letter and a small metal disk. The letter, written by Toby to Hannah and signed “Harry,” confirms that Toby blamed himself for planning the fire, feared his father would erase his guilt with money and persuasion, promised not to kill himself or turn himself in, and urged Hannah to leave Rockaway Watch, change her name, and live. Avery realizes that Jackson and Hannah both called Toby “Harry,” the same name the man used when Avery met him after Hannah’s death.

When Avery reveals that Hannah is dead of natural causes, Jackson is shaken. Jackson then gives Avery another bundle of postcards, explaining that Hannah sent them to Jackson year after year for Harry in case Harry ever returned, but now Jackson believes the postcards belong with Avery.
