CHAPTER 52

Overview

Avery trades Alice Hawthorne’s wedding ring for Tobias Hawthorne’s ring and discovers that both rings contain mysterious date inscriptions. Zara reveals she recognized the dates as another of Tobias’s coded games but refused to play because of the pain of being overlooked by her father. Avery’s mention of Skye’s clue and Jake Nash strikes a nerve, deepening the sense that Tobias’s final puzzle is tied to old family wounds.

Summary

Avery examines Alice Hawthorne’s wedding ring and is surprised by its modest appearance. Inside the band, Avery notices the inscription 8-3-75, which Avery photographs before going to make the trade Jameson suggested: Alice’s ring for Tobias Hawthorne’s.

Avery meets Zara alone, and Zara is visibly shaken that Nan legally gave Alice’s ring to Avery. Zara agrees to exchange “my father’s ring” for “my mother’s,” removing Tobias Hawthorne’s thick silver band from a chain around her neck and handing it over.

Avery checks Tobias’s ring and finds another inscription: 9-7-48. Zara confirms that the date is neither Tobias’s birth date nor Alice’s, and Avery learns that the inscription in Alice’s ring is not the Hawthornes’ wedding date. Zara refuses to answer more questions and tells Avery to leave.

Before leaving, Avery asks whether Zara ever wondered about the inscriptions. Zara admits she recognized them as one of Tobias’s codes but refused to decode them because she did not want another message from a father who made Zara feel least loved behind Toby and Skye, then left the fortune to a stranger.

Avery passes along Nan’s message that “we all do what we have to do to survive,” which Zara recognizes as typical of Nan. Avery then reveals that Tobias left Skye a clue at True North: a picture of Zara, Skye, and Jake Nash. The revelation shocks Zara, who orders Avery to leave. Avery places Tobias’s ring on an end table before going, keeping only the memorized date because Avery decides not to take the ring from Zara, too.
