CHAPTER 43

Overview

Jameson delivers a compass-marked picture frame that contains a hidden photograph and a blank paper, deepening the Hawthorne puzzle at True North. The clue suggests Tobias left connected pieces for Skye and Zara, likely involving Zara’s ring and an old betrayal tied to an unknown boy.

The chapter also shifts personal dynamics: Avery catches Thea and Rebecca kissing, while Xander’s frustration with Jameson pushes Xander to act more aggressively in the hunt. The mystery now points toward the lodge and toward unresolved history between the Hawthorne sisters.

Summary

Oren and the arctic specialist bring Avery back to True North after the paparazzi interruption, and Oren orders his guards to secure the property. Avery assumes skiing is over, which gives Avery a reason to stay focused on the mystery inside the house, though Avery is uneasy about spending less time with Grayson.

Before Avery and Grayson can go inside, Jameson drops from the roof on skis and presents Avery with a picture frame taken from the stairwell. The framed picture shows Tobias Hawthorne’s three children, and Jameson reveals no explanation before challenging Grayson to a Drop and leaving.

As Avery carries the frame toward the basement, Avery notices a compass carved into the back. On the stairs, Avery unexpectedly catches Thea and Rebecca kissing; Rebecca is embarrassed, but Thea calmly frames it as none of Avery’s business. Avery agrees and continues downstairs, where Max and Xander are investigating the house.

Avery shows the group the frame, and Xander immediately tells Avery to remove the back. Four minutes later, in Skye’s former third-floor room, Avery opens the frame and finds a folded piece of notebook paper and another hidden photograph. The photograph shows teenage Zara and Skye with an older boy, while the paper appears blank.

Xander and Rebecca infer that invisible ink is likely involved, and Xander guesses that the clue is only half complete: one part was meant for Skye, while the other may be tied to Zara’s ring. Avery connects the hidden photo to the earlier betrayal note between Skye and Zara and suspects the sisters fought over the boy in the picture. Xander, irritated that Jameson found the clue and then excluded Xander from the Drop, takes the photograph and heads for the lodge, with Max joining him.
