CHAPTER 86

Overview

Oren contains the fallout from Sheffield Grayson's death while Avery processes how many people have tried to use her as bait, leverage, or an instrument. He confirms that Skye and Ricky were framed for the bombing but remain dangerous until Avery gains legal independence.

Avery also learns Rebecca is safe and begins to understand that Tobias Hawthorne survived by anticipating threats. Back at Hawthorne House, Avery resolves to stop being used by Tobias's plans, Toby's enemies, or anyone else.

Summary

After Sheffield Grayson's death, Oren sends Avery into an SUV while he speaks privately with Toby. When Oren returns, Avery notices that several of Oren's men remain inside, implying that Sheffield's body and Toby's intended cover-up are being handled.

In the car, Avery asks whether disposing of corpses is part of Oren's job. Avery then focuses on what the recent events prove: Skye and Ricky did not plant the bomb and were framed. Oren acknowledges that this is true in this instance, but he warns that both remain threats, especially because Skye has already tried to kill Avery. Oren advises leaving them in prison at least until Avery's emancipation is complete, because once Avery can make her own will, Skye and Ricky will no longer profit from Avery's death.

Avery suddenly remembers that Thea helped Mellie abduct Avery because someone had Rebecca. Oren calmly assures Avery that the situation has been handled, Rebecca and the others are safe, and the Hawthorne family does not know what happened. Oren's matter-of-fact tone makes Avery realize how routine kidnappings, bodies, and cover-ups may be in the world she has inherited.

Avery asks whether Tobias Hawthorne lived with the same level of danger. Oren explains that Tobias had enemies too, but his threats were different because Tobias anticipated them. This makes Avery conclude that survival as the Hawthorne heiress will require learning to think like Tobias Hawthorne.

Back at Hawthorne House, Oren insists on escorting Avery to her room. On the grand staircase, Avery tells him the secret passageway must be permanently disabled. Stopping before Tobias Hawthorne's portrait, Avery reflects that Tobias must have known she was not Toby's biological daughter, yet still used her to lure Toby out. Remembering Nash's earlier description of her as both fragile and dangerous, Avery decides she may have been chosen for many reasons, none of them about who she is. Facing the portrait, she silently rejects being used any longer.
