CHAPTER 18

Overview

After the brothers’ private confrontation ends without visible injury, Avery forces Grayson to confront why Toby’s disappearance matters to her: Toby was adopted, and Avery’s birth certificate may connect him to her. Grayson reluctantly helps by narrowing the old will’s charity list to four unfamiliar organizations, giving Avery, Jameson, and Xander a new lead.

The chapter shifts the investigation from a broad theory about Toby’s survival to a concrete puzzle, while also heightening tension between Grayson’s protective resistance and Jameson’s drive to keep searching.

Summary

Outside the Hawthorne Foundation building, Avery paces anxiously while Grayson and Jameson are inside after Jameson invoked the brothers’ ritual challenge. Xander treats the confrontation as normal brotherly tradition, explaining that Grayson usually begins with a tactical attack and that the fight often becomes wrestling and bickering. Oren remains nearby, amused but alert.

Jameson soon emerges apparently unharmed, and Avery asks Oren for privacy after Jameson assures him the building is secure. Oren notes that he personally designed its security, then reluctantly allows Avery, Jameson, and Xander to go back inside.

Inside, Grayson is also uninjured and immediately acknowledges that Avery wants his help, though he repeats that investigating Toby’s disappearance is a bad idea. Avery pushes past his protectiveness and reveals the new stakes: Toby was adopted, and Avery’s birth certificate has made her suspect Toby could be her father. Xander is startled, while Grayson understands the implication immediately.

Avery shows Grayson a photo of the charities listed in Tobias and Alice Hawthorne’s old will. Grayson recognizes most of them as organizations connected to the Hawthorne Foundation’s giving, but identifies four names he does not remember seeing in the records: the Allport Institute, Camden House, Colin’s Way, and the Rockaway Watch Society.

Avery, Jameson, and Xander begin searching the four unfamiliar charity names for patterns in their words and ordering. Grayson leaves them to investigate but pauses to tell Jameson that he is wrong, then says something in what Avery suspects is Latin. Jameson answers in the same language, and Xander, who appears to understand, says nothing before pulling Avery toward the exit and the SUV.
