CHAPTER 16
Overview
Avery gains access to Tobias Hawthorne’s prior will, but only after submitting to media training meant to prepare her for the growing threat of Ricky Grambs’s public narrative. The old will confirms that Tobias and Alice once planned to leave almost everything to charity, cutting out their daughters except for symbolic keepsakes. Because the charity list is the biggest meaningful difference from the final will, Avery, Jameson, and Xander realize Grayson may hold the next key to the Toby mystery.
Summary
From the school roof, Avery calls Alisa to ask about Tobias Hawthorne’s earlier will. Alisa says the firm has an original on file, but requires Avery to meet with Landon for media training first and to let Oren onto the roof. Alisa also makes clear that Avery must be ready to control the public story before Ricky Grambs can shape it.
After school, Avery meets Landon in the Oval Room. Landon explains that one-on-one interviews require redirection rather than silence, and that Avery needs a personal theme, six talking points, and personal anecdotes to humanize herself. Landon also teaches Avery about concise answers to “no” questions, warning that even insisting on innocence can sound defensive.
Once Avery completes the meeting, Alisa takes Avery, Oren, and Jameson to McNamara, Ortega, and Jones. Xander is already waiting outside, having somehow learned about the visit. Inside, Alisa leaves Avery, Jameson, and Xander alone with the will but keeps the office door open, reinforcing her protective oversight.
The three read Tobias Hawthorne’s old will. Like the final will, it gives the Laughlins money and lifelong tenancy at Wayback Cottage and includes similar terms for Nan. Unlike the final will, it leaves Skye and Zara only symbolic objects and leaves the rest of Tobias’s estate to a long list of charities. Alice Hawthorne’s attached will contains nearly identical terms, showing that Tobias’s wife shared or endorsed the plan to disinherit the family.
Avery notes the two major differences between the old will and the final one: Avery is absent because Avery had not yet been born, and the charity list is central. Jameson concludes that if Tobias hid a clue in this will, it must be in the charities. Xander and Jameson realize the best source for the family’s charitable history is Grayson, whom Avery has already told about Toby.
