CHAPTER 15
Overview
Jameson confronts Avery with the theory that Toby Hawthorne is Avery’s father, and Avery shares enough evidence to make the possibility feel nearly certain. The discovery shifts Jameson and Avery from rivals in a bet to reluctant partners, while Avery’s hurt deepens because Toby still has not appeared. Their rooftop conversation turns the investigation toward Tobias Hawthorne’s old will, suggesting the next major clue may be hidden in the document written after Toby’s supposed death.
Summary
The next day at Heights Country Day, Jameson finds Avery hiding in the archive and pushes past Avery’s attempt to avoid him. Jameson quietly states his theory that Toby Hawthorne is Avery’s father, forcing Avery to follow Jameson to the Black Box Theater while Eli trails them as security.
In the theater, Jameson asks Avery to confirm or deny the theory. Avery cautiously reveals that Tobias Hawthorne’s desk contained a copy of Avery’s birth certificate with Avery’s father’s name but not that man’s signature. Jameson sees this as proof that Tobias knew Toby survived and used Avery to draw his lost son back into the family’s game, though Avery bitterly notes that Toby has not come for Avery despite Avery’s fame.
Jameson proposes calling off their bet because the truth about Toby and Avery is too large for either of them to solve alone. Avery recognizes that Jameson needs Avery because Avery is at the center of the mystery, but Avery also admits vulnerability after the discovery. Instead of exploiting the moment romantically, Jameson suggests getting air.
Jameson takes Avery to the roof of the Art Center and locks Eli out. There, Jameson explains that Tobias often said Hawthorne men have nine lives, implying Tobias knew Toby survived the Hawthorne Island fire. Jameson brings out a makeshift rooftop golf setup and shows Avery how he comes there to release frustration, revealing that Tobias raised the Hawthorne grandsons in his image and that Jameson defines himself as the one who never gives up.
As Avery hits golf balls with Jameson’s guidance, Avery lets some emotion surface and asks why Toby would have been absent all Avery’s life if Toby is really Avery’s father. Thinking through Tobias Hawthorne’s patterns, Avery and Jameson realize that the fire, Tobias’s change of middle name to Tattersall, and the old will disinheriting the family all happened around the same time. Avery concludes that Tobias’s earlier will may contain clues, just as the later will did.
