After returning to Hawthorne House, Avery asks Oren to show her the Hawthorne vault. Oren takes only Avery through a series of hallways to an elevator, then reveals that the real entrance is hidden behind the elevator wall and opens only when the elevator is present and an approved fingerprint is scanned.

Avery learns that only Oren and Nan currently have access to the vault. This matters because Tobias Hawthorne’s will gave his late wife’s jewelry to Nan, not to Zara, Skye, or Avery, making Nan’s control over the vault newly significant.

Inside the vault, Avery finds a steel room filled with drawers of extraordinarily valuable jewelry and other treasures. Oren explains that while Nan owns Mrs. Hawthorne’s jewelry, Avery owns many of Tobias Hawthorne’s museum-quality pieces, and anything worth more than two million dollars is stored elsewhere.

Avery asks specifically for Tobias Hawthorne’s wedding ring. Oren checks the drawer containing Tobias’s watches, rings, and cuff links, but the ring is not there. Oren concludes that if the ring is absent from the vault, Tobias likely had it placed in the envelope given to Zara at the reading of the will.

The search leaves Avery surrounded by immense wealth but without the single object she needs. The likely location of Tobias’s wedding ring shifts the focus back to Zara and the mysterious envelope.
