CHAPTER 28

Overview

Avery follows Grayson to a hidden rooftop space and finds Jameson, who reveals that Colin's Way connects the Hawthorne Island fire to Sheffield Grayson. The discovery lands hardest on Grayson: Sheffield is his father, and Tobias Hawthorne may have known for years.

Rather than stopping the investigation, Grayson decides to join Avery and Jameson so he can control the risks. The chapter turns a personal family revelation into a new lead on Toby, the fire, and Avery's possible parentage.

Summary

Avery follows Grayson through hidden passages in Hawthorne House while Eli trails behind. Grayson stops trying to shake Avery and leads Avery through a quilt-covered alcove into a crawl space with a ladder that opens onto a small flat section of the roof.

On the roof, Avery and Grayson find Jameson holding the hidden-compartment knife. Grayson starts to invoke one of the brothers' private rules, but Avery refuses to let the pattern continue. Jameson asks Avery to promise him use of one of her planes before he reveals what he has discovered.

Jameson explains that Colin's Way was founded in memory of Colin Anders Wright, one of the victims of the Hawthorne Island fire. Avery then supplies the revelation Jameson cannot bring himself to say: the charity was founded by Colin's uncle, Sheffield Grayson. Jameson confirms that Sheffield Grayson is Grayson's father.

Grayson absorbs the news with visible strain and immediately reasons through its implications. Because Tobias Hawthorne included Colin's Way in his will for twenty years, Grayson believes the old man must have known the truth, perhaps to make a point to Skye or to leave her a clue. Jameson suggests that the charity may be another layer in Tobias's long-running clue system.

Jameson tries to help Grayson treat the revelation like a game so it will hurt less, while Grayson falls back on the idea that nothing has to matter unless a person lets it. When Avery tries to leave them alone, Grayson stops her and shifts focus to the investigation: Sheffield Grayson might know something about the island fire, Toby, and the signature on Avery's birth certificate.

Grayson admits Avery and Jameson will not abandon the search, so Grayson decides to oversee it himself. Jameson accepts this, announces he will arrange the plane Avery promised, and says they leave at dawn.
