CHAPTER 78

Overview

Avery wakes after the bombing to discover she has been unconscious for a full week and is being treated inside Hawthorne House rather than a hospital. The chapter reveals that Alisa removed Avery from an Oregon hospital, prompting Max to call her mother, Dr. Liu, as a trusted physician.

Avery’s survival steadies the immediate crisis, but the medical danger has not fully disappeared, and Avery’s first concern is whether the Hawthorne brothers know she is awake. The chapter shifts the story from the explosion’s aftermath into recovery, while raising questions about control, trust, and what happened during Avery’s lost week.

Summary

Avery wakes to crushing pressure, pain, tubes, and monitors. Avery first assumes she is in a hospital, then realizes she is in her own room at Hawthorne House. Memories return in fragments: Jameson, Grayson, lightning, fire, and the bomb.

A monitor alarm brings Dr. Liu, Max’s mother, into the room. Dr. Liu steadies Avery and begins treating her, examining Avery and giving Avery pain medication. By the time Libby and Max are allowed in, Avery is disoriented from morphine.

Max explains that Alisa brought unconscious Avery back from the hospital in Oregon, angering others by removing Avery from that setting. Because Max did not trust Alisa to choose Avery’s doctors, Max called Dr. Liu, despite Max’s strained family situation, and Dr. Liu came to Hawthorne House.

Avery realizes that enough time has passed for all of that to happen and asks how long Avery was unconscious. Libby reveals that Avery has been out for seven days, and Avery learns that doctors had warned Libby that Avery might not wake up.

Dr. Liu explains that Avery’s coma was medically induced, Avery’s body has been healing, and an earlier attempt to wake Avery was delayed by unexpected brain swelling that is now under control. Avery immediately asks whether the others, especially the Hawthorne boys, know Avery is awake, but Dr. Liu insists they take things one step at a time.
