CHAPTER 59
Overview
Libby and Nash reach Cartago, signaling that the investigation into Tobias Hawthorne’s Costa Rican house is about to produce new answers. Meanwhile, Avery and Rebecca confront the emotional consequences of the revelation that Rebecca’s mother gave birth to Toby, making Rebecca and Emily part of Avery’s possible family line.
Rebecca apologizes for failing Avery and admits that Toby’s poem has forced her to face long-buried anger over Emily, her parents, and her own guilt. Avery accepts the apology, and their shared anger becomes a tentative point of connection rather than another source of division.
Summary
Avery has a tightly scheduled school day and barely has time for lunch. While waiting in line at the refectory, Avery receives a photo from Libby taken from a plane approaching Cartago, confirming that Libby and Nash are arriving in Costa Rica to investigate Tobias Hawthorne’s house there.
Avery sits down to eat and thinks about the possibility that Libby and Nash will find something that explains the puzzle Tobias left for his daughters and later for Xander. Rebecca then asks to sit with Avery, revealing that Rebecca has cut off her long red hair, leaving herself physically less hidden than before.
Rebecca acknowledges that Xander told Avery the truth about Rebecca’s mother being Toby’s birth mother. Avery tries to ease the tension by joking that Rebecca should not expect to be called Aunt Rebecca, which makes Rebecca laugh and say Avery sounded like Emily. This makes Avery realize that if Rebecca is Avery’s aunt, Emily was too, and Avery reconsiders Thea dressing Avery like Emily and Grayson reacting as if he had seen a ghost.
Avery asks about Rebecca’s father, and Rebecca explains that her parents have been together since high school, but Rebecca does not know whether her father was Toby’s father or even knows that a baby existed. Rebecca describes her father as wholly devoted to her mother, including taking her name and supporting her choices about Emily’s medical treatment, implying that Rebecca’s father also enabled Rebecca’s neglect.
Rebecca apologizes to Avery for what Rebecca did and failed to do, especially for not warning Avery about Drake and Skye before Drake tried to kill Avery. Rebecca admits that she has been trying to be okay but is not, and that Toby’s William Blake poem has made her confront the anger she buried while growing up in Emily’s shadow.
Rebecca cannot fully say that the one time Rebecca got angry, Emily died, so Avery says it for her. Rebecca says the experience damaged her and led Rebecca to make mistakes, and Avery accepts the apology. Rebecca adds that she is finally angry at many people, and Avery admits that she is angry too, then sincerely compliments Rebecca’s new hair.
