CHAPTER 36

Overview

Avery is left shaken after losing contact with Grayson and Jameson, and Sheffield’s accusation makes her seriously confront the possibility that Toby Hawthorne may have started the Hawthorne Island fire. Her questions about Tobias Hawthorne deepen, especially because his will seems to both conceal and expose the same family tragedy.

After surviving the fundraiser, Avery studies her inheritance binder and is overwhelmed by the scale of what she owns compared with the life she and her mother once imagined. The chapter ends with Avery discovering a Rocky Mountain property named True North, suggesting another important clue hidden inside the Hawthorne estate.

Summary

After Sheffield Grayson’s call goes silent, Avery repeatedly says Grayson’s and Jameson’s names, then hangs up and calls back. Neither boy answers, leaving Avery worried about what Sheffield’s barely controlled anger might mean for them.

Avery’s anxiety turns toward Toby Hawthorne, whom she still thinks of as Harry. Sheffield’s claim that Toby bought the accelerant forces Avery to consider whether Toby could have set the Hawthorne Island fire, and whether the scandal was easier to bury because Toby was presumed dead along with everyone else.

Avery also reconsiders Tobias Hawthorne’s actions. If Tobias paid to cover up the fire, Avery wonders why he later disinherited his family and used his will to point her back toward Hawthorne Island, suggesting that the old tragedy remains central to the inheritance mystery.

Alisa interrupts Avery’s thoughts and brings her back inside for the live auction. Avery gets through the rest of the fundraiser, where many auction items turn out to be stays at luxurious properties that Avery now owns, including homes in the Bahamas, Greece, and Scotland.

Later that night, after more unanswered calls and hours of worry, Avery finally opens the inheritance binder Alisa gave her. Seeing page after page of vacation homes makes Avery feel detached and overwhelmed, especially because Avery and her mother once dreamed of traveling but only ever had blank postcards.

Then Avery turns to a page showing a mountain cabin in the Rocky Mountains. The house’s beauty catches Avery’s eye, but the name at the top of the page stops her completely: True North.
