CHAPTER 40

Overview

Avery searches Skye’s old room at True North and discovers a hidden passage connecting it to Zara’s former room. The group finds an old message in a bottle accusing someone of an unforgivable betrayal, deepening the mystery around Skye, Zara, and Toby’s poisoned family history.

The chapter also exposes emotional tension between Rebecca and Thea, linking the Hawthorne family’s old fractures to present-day conflicts among Avery’s allies. Avery leaves with a new question: what did one sister know, and what did she do anyway?

Summary

Avery enters Tobias Hawthorne’s mountain house at True North and finds it grand, rustic, and intimidating. Alisa tells Avery that Avery has been assigned the largest bedroom on the main floor, but Avery instead asks which bedroom once belonged to Skye.

On the way upstairs, Avery studies family photographs that make the Hawthornes look unusually ordinary. Avery fixates on pictures of Toby at different ages, especially one of Toby skiing with teenage Zara and Skye at True North, and Avery wonders whether Toby’s smile resembles Avery’s own.

Avery and Max leave their bags in Skye’s old bedroom and begin searching for hidden compartments. In Skye’s closet, Avery notices old clothes that seem preserved from Skye’s teenage years, including the ski jacket from the photograph. A noise leads Avery to a hidden door in the closet wall and into a narrow cedar-scented passageway.

In the passage, Avery runs into Thea and Rebecca, who are entering from the matching hidden doorway in Zara’s old room. Thea finds a loose floorboard and uncovers a hidden glass bottle containing an old note. The handwriting appears feminine, not Tobias Hawthorne’s, and the message reads: You knew, and you did it anyway. I will never forgive you for this.

The group concludes that the note likely relates to Zara and Skye, whose rooms the passage connects. Avery recalls Toby’s line about the Hawthorne family tree poisoning Skye, Zara, and himself, and wonders what mistake or betrayal destroyed the sisters’ relationship. Rebecca’s reaction shifts the conversation toward her own hurt with Thea, suggesting that some family wounds and personal betrayals remain unresolved.
