CHAPTER 83
Overview
Toby answers Sheffield Grayson’s trap, proving he will risk himself for Avery even while denying he is her father. During the confrontation, Toby reveals that the fatal Hawthorne Island fire began with Colin’s dare and Toby’s reckless anger, not a simple murder plot. Sheffield prepares to kill both Toby and Avery, but Mellie suddenly shoots him, abruptly reversing the hostage situation.
Summary
Avery, still tied to a chair in the storage unit, realizes Toby may never come and that Sheffield Grayson will not be able to release her if his plan fails. Avery tries to get Sheffield to reveal how Toby is supposed to find them, but Sheffield only says he left clues as part of a game for Avery’s supposed father.
When heavy footsteps approach, Sheffield tells Avery the situation is not personal and draws a gun. Avery warns that the person following the clues might be Jameson, Xander, or Grayson, but Sheffield remains focused on revenge. The arrival is Toby, whom Avery instinctively calls Harry, and Toby gently acknowledges Avery before demanding that Sheffield let Avery go.
Sheffield forces Toby into the accelerant-soaked storage unit and taunts him about Avery being his daughter. Toby denies it, saying Avery is not his child and later explaining that when Hannah became pregnant, Toby had not seen Hannah for years. Toby gives Avery a chess reference, which Avery understands as a signal of misdirection, and Avery begins using adrenaline and leverage to break the antique chair’s arms.
Toby distracts Sheffield by confronting the past. Toby says Colin dared him to set the Hawthorne Island fire after Toby talked about burning everything down, but the plan was to clear everyone out and watch the house burn from a distance. Toby says they did not count on lightning, while Sheffield accuses Toby of lying and killing Colin.
Avery frees herself enough to stand, but Sheffield declares he cannot leave witnesses and prepares to kill both Toby and Avery. Avery lunges forward just as a gun fires. Instead of an explosion, Sheffield collapses, and Mellie appears holding a gun, wide-eyed and stunned.
