CHAPTER 48

Overview

Avery leaves the mountain under heightened security and confronts the reality that the professional intruder may represent a serious threat to her life and inheritance. The danger sharpens Avery's suspicions about Skye and Ricky, while Grayson and Jameson's tension hints that Avery's personal relationships remain fraught.

A poker game meant to ease the mood instead exposes Rebecca's unresolved grief over Emily and her painful history with Thea. Rebecca's accusation that Thea's choices helped lead to Emily's death fractures the group emotionally just as Jameson redirects everyone toward the next objective: obtaining Zara's ring.

Summary

After the security breach at the mountain estate, Avery leaves by jet with the others. Though Avery has barely slept, adrenaline keeps her alert, and Avery questions what Eli meant by calling the intruder a professional. Max jokes about an assassin, but Avery cannot dismiss the possibility that someone might want her dead.

Avery thinks through possible threats, especially Skye and Ricky. Because Avery confronted Ricky and Libby fought with Ricky, Avery worries Ricky may know Avery is pursuing emancipation. If Avery dies, one of Avery's heirs benefits, making the danger feel practical rather than abstract.

Grayson firmly tells Avery that no one will hurt her, then directs a pointed comment at Jameson, implying concern about Jameson's influence or intentions. Jameson deflects with sarcasm, and Xander lightens the tension. To keep the group from spiraling into conflict, Avery suggests poker.

During the poker game, Avery beats Thea with a stronger full house, while Jameson theatrically stays in despite having nothing. The game is interrupted when Rebecca's phone repeatedly buzzes. Thea sees that Rebecca's mother is calling, but Rebecca turns the phone off rather than answer.

Thea presses Rebecca to consider what her mother needs, and Rebecca snaps. Rebecca admits her mother looks through her as if Rebecca is not there, and Rebecca connects that pain to Emily's death and Thea's choice to cover for Emily that night. Rebecca says that if Rebecca had mattered enough to Thea, Emily might still be alive.

The accusation leaves Thea silent and devastated. Jameson steps in with an abrupt change of subject, asking Avery how they plan to get Zara's ring, redirecting the group back toward the mystery and the search for the vault.
