CHAPTER 29
Overview
Avery stays behind while Jameson and Grayson pursue Sheffield Grayson, leaving her anxious and cut off from the action. Xander pulls Avery into his own investigation and reveals that Camden House links Sheffield, Toby, David Golding, and Colin Anders Wright.
The chapter shifts the fire investigation toward the possibility that the three boys knew each other through Camden House before the tragedy. Rebecca’s emotional reaction shows that the past remains deeply painful and that even willing allies have limits.
Summary
Avery decides not to accompany Jameson and Grayson because inheriting requires her to live in Hawthorne House for a year, and because Grayson deserves to meet his father without Avery intruding. Jameson and Grayson leave to pursue Sheffield Grayson, while Avery goes to school and anxiously waits for word from them.
At school, Xander approaches Avery and insists that Jameson and Grayson’s investigation is also his game. During Dr. Meghani’s class on purposeful gaps and “white space,” Avery admits that she is waiting to hear from Xander’s brothers and asks whether Xander knows the name Sheffield Grayson.
Xander reveals that Sheffield Grayson appears twice in his charity-donor database: once for Colin’s Way and once for Camden House. When Xander searches for Sheffield’s image, he immediately understands the significance, recognizing the connection to Grayson.
Xander gets permission for Avery and himself to continue their assignment outside, where Rebecca joins them while Eli keeps watch nearby. Xander explains that Thea was supposed to come too because of her competitive, strategic instincts, but Rebecca says Thea is not coming and asks for the new lead instead.
Xander lays out the Camden House connection: David Golding’s family and Colin Anders Wright’s uncle were donors, and Avery adds that Nan told her Toby was a patient there. Xander theorizes that Toby, David, and Colin all spent time at Camden House and may have met there before the Hawthorne Island fire, reframing the boys’ state of mind that summer. Rebecca becomes visibly distressed by the mention of the fire and the deaths, then withdraws, saying she wants to help but cannot do it today.
