Max is delighted by Xander’s gift, though Max quickly notices that Avery looks pale and jokes that Dr. Liu would disapprove. Avery privately recognizes that her doctor would be even more upset if the doctor knew what Avery had done in the past twelve hours.

Avery thanks Max for bringing Max’s mother to Hawthorne House, knowing that the call was difficult for Max. Max deflects with humor, thanking Avery for getting blown up because Avery’s injury gave Max a reason to call and gave Max’s mother a reason to answer.

Avery asks whether Max will be going home soon. Although Avery does not want Max to leave, Avery thinks Max would be safer away from Hawthorne House, the Hawthornes, Avery’s inheritance, and the poisonous legacy that surrounds them.

When Thea calls, Avery nearly ignores the call but answers because Xander gave Avery the number for a reason. Thea says she discovered who vandalized Avery’s locker, but Avery refuses the name and instead asks whether Rebecca is okay.

Thea says Rebecca is shaken but fine, and that Rebecca yelled at Thea for endangering Avery. Thea admits that Thea had a choice and chose Rebecca, insisting that Thea will always keep choosing Rebecca no matter how long it takes for Rebecca to believe it.

After the call, Avery reflects that she has never understood what it means for one person to be everything to someone. That realization sends Avery to see Grayson.
