CHAPTER 37

Overview

Avery realizes that Tobias Hawthorne’s clues about Skye’s compass and Zara’s ring may have been intended for his daughters, making True North a likely next stop in the larger mystery. Although Alisa and Oren try to block a trip to Colorado because of the inheritance’s residency requirement and safety risks, Libby reasserts herself as Avery’s guardian.

Libby’s altered appearance reveals how Skye’s manipulation and the threat of Ricky have shaken her, but she chooses to stand up for Avery. The chapter shifts momentum from discovery to action, with Avery gaining both a possible destination and renewed support from her sister.

Summary

The morning after finding the True North property in her inheritance binder, Avery connects it to Tobias Hawthorne’s bequest to Skye: a compass and the wish that Skye always know true north. Because the same wording appeared in an older will written twenty years earlier, Avery realizes the clue could not originally have been meant for the Hawthorne grandsons. Avery concludes that Tobias’s game may have been designed for his daughters.

Avery then reconsiders Zara’s bequest: Tobias left Zara his wedding ring and referred to steadfast love. If Skye’s compass points to True North in Colorado, Avery reasons that Zara’s ring may be another piece of the same puzzle. Max immediately proposes that they go to Colorado first and then get the ring, but Avery worries that leaving Hawthorne House could endanger her inheritance.

Avery calls Alisa to clarify the residency requirement. Alisa explains that the will allows Avery no more than three nights per month away from Hawthorne House, which means a short trip is technically possible. Oren and Alisa both object, arguing that travel is too risky because any storm, injury, or delay could prevent Avery from returning and cost her everything.

Libby arrives unexpectedly, transformed with brown hair, conservative clothes, and a French braid. Avery is alarmed by the change, but Libby focuses on Alisa’s attempt to block Avery’s trip. When Alisa claims control over Avery’s assets, including the planes, Libby reminds everyone that she is still Avery’s guardian until Avery is emancipated.

Libby admits that Avery was right about Ricky and Skye. Skye had implied that a judge would see the cleaned-up Ricky as more respectable than Libby, explaining Libby’s new appearance. Though Avery feels guilty for how the inheritance has disrupted Libby’s life, Libby insists that protecting Avery is her job and demands that Alisa find a way to give Avery the break she needs.
