CHAPTER 64

Overview

In the aftermath of the televised ambush and Grayson’s staged kiss, Avery, Grayson, Alisa, and Oren retreat under security pressure while Alisa demands the truth. Avery and Grayson reveal how much they have kept from Alisa about Harry being Toby, Libby and Nash searching for him, and Toby’s warning not to look for him.

The confrontation exposes Alisa’s hurt and anger over being treated as untrustworthy, while also revealing the personal cost of her loyalty to Tobias Hawthorne. Avery finally tells Alisa the most dangerous secret: Toby was adopted, born to the Laughlins’ teenage daughter, and is likely Avery’s father.

Summary

After Grayson ends the live-TV crisis by kissing Avery, Avery and Grayson are rushed off-camera and into an elevator with Alisa, Landon, and Oren. Alisa demands an explanation, while Landon points out that the interview became an ambush because crucial information was withheld from her. Landon then walks away, implying she cannot do her job under those conditions.

Oren takes control of the immediate security threat, telling everyone to wait until they are in the car. He has already sent men ahead, deployed a decoy, and arranged for the group to leave through the back before reporters can descend on them.

Once they are in the car, Alisa demands to know who knew about the Toby theory. Avery admits she did, and Grayson explains that Avery originally asked Alisa to locate Harry, unaware that Harry was Toby. Avery adds that she recognized Toby from Nan’s locket, while Grayson reveals that Xander already knew because Tobias Hawthorne left him a clue.

Alisa is furious that Avery did not tell her and argues that if Toby Hawthorne was the person they were searching for, she could have justified far greater resources. Avery shows Alisa the message Libby found in New Castle telling them to stop looking. Alisa questions the evidence, and Avery reveals that Libby and Nash went after Toby, further shocking Alisa.

When Alisa challenges Grayson for not consulting a lawyer, Grayson admits that they were not sure where Alisa’s loyalties lay. The accusation wounds Alisa deeply; she insists she has only done what Tobias Hawthorne wanted and hints at the personal cost of that loyalty, especially in relation to Nash. Regaining control, Alisa warns Avery that if Avery lies to her again, Alisa will abandon Avery to the consequences herself.

Avery then gives Alisa the remaining revelations: Toby was adopted, his biological mother was the Laughlins’ teenage daughter, and Avery has reason to believe that Toby is probably Avery’s father. This confession brings the secret Grayson stopped Avery from saying on camera into Alisa’s hands instead.
