CHAPTER 51

Overview

Faced with Zara’s impossible five-million-dollar demand, the group rejects payment and shifts to a trade: Alice Hawthorne’s wedding ring for Tobias Hawthorne’s. Xander’s hidden cryptocurrency fortune briefly surfaces, revealing another protected Hawthorne secret, but Jameson’s strategy becomes the viable path forward.

Nan agrees to help and, in the process, reveals that Tobias’s message to Zara likely alluded to Zara’s past infidelity during her first marriage. The clue reframes Tobias’s bequest as a pointed personal message and gives Avery’s group a new way to pressure or understand Zara.

Summary

After leaving Zara’s wing, Avery, Jameson, Xander, Grayson, and Max regroup in Tobias Hawthorne’s study. Avery doubts that Alisa or the estate’s trustees would ever approve paying Zara five million dollars for five minutes with Tobias’s wedding ring. Jameson suspects Zara is manipulating them rather than making a serious demand.

Xander unexpectedly reveals that he can get the money himself. His brothers are shocked to learn that years of birthday investment money, placed in cryptocurrency and sold at the right time, have made him independently wealthy. Grayson worries that Skye might exploit Xander if she learns about the money, but Xander says it is protected in a trust with Nash as trustee.

Max rejects the idea of paying Zara, and Jameson proposes a different strategy: a trade. Since Zara has Tobias Hawthorne’s wedding ring, Jameson suggests offering Zara her mother Alice’s wedding ring in exchange. To do that, the group goes to the music room to ask Nan, who inherited Alice O’Day Hawthorne’s jewelry.

Nan demands Avery’s help standing and questions Max’s presence before Grayson says they need Nan’s help. Avery explains that Tobias left a message for Skye after Toby disappeared and that the group believes he left Zara a similar clue. To obtain Zara’s clue, Avery asks for Alice’s wedding ring so they can trade it for Tobias’s.

Nan reflects on Zara as a shy, bookish child unlike attention-loving Alice or flamboyant Skye. When Jameson mentions Tobias’s repeated bequest to Zara—his wedding ring and the hope that she love as wholly and steadfastly as he loved Alice—Nan recognizes the message as pointed rather than subtle. The group realizes that twenty years ago, when Toby disappeared, Zara was married to someone else and was likely having an affair.

Nan agrees to give them Alice’s ring. As she heads toward the doorway, where Eli waits, Nan tells Avery to inform Zara that Nan will not judge her: Zara has toughened up, and everyone does what they must to survive.
