CHAPTER 34

Overview

Outside the fundraiser, Avery and Libby deal with the fallout from Rebecca’s mother’s public breakdown while Nash reveals more of the Laughlin family’s grief and resentment toward the Hawthornes. The chapter shifts the emotional focus to Avery and Libby, as Avery accidentally exposes Skye’s murder attempt and Libby feels shut out, underestimated, and replaced by Avery’s new life. Libby’s signed emancipation papers deepen the sisters’ fracture just as Jameson’s call pulls Avery back into the Hawthorne mystery.

Summary

After Rebecca Laughlin’s mother collapses during the fundraiser, Avery finds Libby outside with Nash. Nash reassures Libby that Libby did nothing wrong by reacting automatically and trying to help, but Libby worries that Alisa had warned Libby not to cause a scene that night.

Nash explains that Rebecca’s mother is the Laughlins’ daughter and grew up on the Hawthorne estate. Her relationship with her parents has long been strained, and after Emily died, Rebecca’s mother blamed the Hawthorne family. Nash also clarifies that her comment about all her babies dying refers to multiple miscarriages before Emily was born, making the outburst even more painful because Rebecca is still alive.

Libby asks Nash to leave so Libby can speak privately with Avery. Libby then asks what Avery said to Ricky earlier. Avery tries to avoid the conversation, but when Libby downplays Ricky’s involvement with Skye as merely weird, Avery blurts out that Skye tried to have Avery killed.

Libby is shocked and asks whether Avery told the police. Avery calls the situation complicated because of Avery’s promise to Grayson, but Libby hears that as confirmation that Avery sees Libby as simple, naive, and incapable of understanding difficult choices.

The argument shifts from Skye to Avery and Libby’s changing relationship. Libby reveals that Libby signed the emancipation papers and assumes Avery wants freedom from Libby, Ricky, and everyone else. Avery tries to deny that interpretation, but Jameson calls, and Avery takes the call, leaving Libby hurt and resigned.
