CHAPTER 75

Overview

Avery reads Hannah's postcards to Toby and realizes Hannah's love for him endured after he left, reshaping Avery's understanding of her mother. The postcards also strengthen Avery's belief that Toby was her father and stir Avery's unresolved feelings for Grayson and Jameson.

The chapter shifts from emotional revelation to danger when Avery shares Toby's mysterious gold disk with the Hawthorne brothers. As Oren's team brings Avery back to the jet, an explosion erupts at the airstrip, turning the investigation into an immediate physical threat.

Summary

On the drive back to the airstrip, Avery reads the postcards Hannah wrote to Toby. Hearing Hannah's voice in the words is painful because the postcards make clear that Hannah loved Toby deeply even after Toby left her.

Avery reconsiders the version of Hannah she grew up believing in: a mother full of love who never seemed to want romance. The postcards reveal that Hannah had never stopped loving Toby, and that realization unsettles Avery's own feelings about Grayson and Jameson.

As Avery keeps reading, the postcards shift from Hannah's love for Toby to Hannah's love for Avery. Hannah records Avery's first steps, first word, and childhood inventions until the postcards stop with Hannah's death. Avery tells Grayson that Hannah wrote to Toby about Avery, and Avery concludes more firmly that Toby was her father.

Jameson calls Grayson, and Avery asks Grayson to answer. Avery shows both Hawthorne brothers the small gold disk Jackson Currie said Toby left with him. The disk has nine concentric circles engraved on one side, and Jameson notes that even if it does not look valuable, that means little in the Hawthorne family.

When the convoy reaches the airstrip, Oren orders the plane swept and escorts Avery toward the jet. Avery is preoccupied with Hannah's words and with thoughts of both Grayson and Jameson. A sudden stillness follows the cold wind, Avery hears a high-pitched beep, and the world explodes into fire.
