CHAPTER 22
Overview
Jameson and Avery compare discoveries and realize the charities in Tobias Hawthorne’s clues may link Toby, Camden House, and victims of the Hawthorne Island fire. Avery reveals a troubling new possibility: Sheffield Grayson, uncle of fire victim Colin Anders Wright, may be connected to Skye and therefore to the Hawthorne brothers’ parentage.
Because Skye is the only person likely to know the truth, Avery and Jameson decide to evade security and go to her, despite Skye’s past attempt on Avery’s life. Their escape on a motorcycle pushes the investigation from research into direct confrontation with a dangerous source.
Summary
The next morning, Jameson contacts Avery through the fireplace passage. Avery opens the hidden release, and Jameson reports that two of the four charities tied to Tobias Hawthorne’s clues have connections to victims of the Hawthorne Island fire. Jameson is still investigating but has developed a theory.
Avery reveals that Jameson’s theory may match her own: Toby was likely a patient at Camden House and may have lost his memory after the fire. Jameson is energized by the shared discovery, but Avery realizes he has not yet uncovered the part that unsettled her most: Colin’s Way is tied to Colin Anders Wright, whose uncle is Sheffield Grayson.
Avery shows Jameson the video of Sheffield Grayson and points out his eyes, his surname, and the fact that Skye gave all her sons last names as first names while never revealing their fathers. Because Grayson is nineteen, Avery reasons that he was conceived about twenty years ago, soon after the Hawthorne Island fire, making the coincidence suspicious in a house built on patterns and clues.
Jameson decides there is only one way to learn whether Sheffield Grayson is connected to his family: they must ask Skye. Avery knows visiting Skye is dangerous because Skye previously tried to have Avery killed, and Oren would never approve. Still, Skye is the only person likely to answer questions about Jameson’s and Grayson’s paternity.
To avoid Oren’s security team, Jameson leads Avery through Hawthorne House’s secret passageways to the indoor garage. He retrieves a motorcycle, unlocks the key puzzle box, and offers Avery a helmet. Avery says she does not trust him, but she climbs on behind him anyway, choosing to follow the lead despite the risk.
