Avery resists Max’s implication and tries to go back to sleep, but Max pushes the subject. When Max asks what Avery’s issue is with Jameson, Avery admits that she believes Jameson does not truly want Avery; Avery thinks Jameson wants the mystery and sees Avery as part of a puzzle he can use.

Max presses Avery to examine whether Avery still wants Jameson, and Avery reflects on charged moments with him: Jameson protecting Avery during the shooting, comforting Avery after the fireworks, teasing Avery, golfing with Avery, riding a motorcycle with Avery, and telling Avery to play safe for now. Avery carefully admits that she might like how she feels with Jameson, though she insists the situation is complicated.

Max identifies the complication as Grayson. Avery calls Grayson a friend, but Max argues that Grayson represents Avery’s tendency to keep desire and vulnerability at a distance so no one gets hurt.

When Avery asks why Max cares so much, Max admits that Max’s own life has fallen apart: Max’s parents will not take Max’s calls and will not let Max’s brother speak to Max. Max says Avery is all Max has and that Max wants Avery to be happy, then returns to the immediate question of what Avery will do about Jameson being in the hot tub.
