CHAPTER 90
Overview
Avery is legally emancipated, gaining adult status and new control over her life after weeks of danger and manipulation. Rather than letting Alisa, the Hawthornes, or Tobias Hawthorne's legacy define her, Avery recognizes that she can now make her own choices.
Avery then tells Jameson the truth about Toby's daughter and the missing disk, accepting that some answers may remain out of reach. Their rooftop coin toss becomes a deliberate emotional risk, and Avery chooses Jameson and the future with boldness instead of fear.
Summary
Avery appears before a judge to be emancipated. The judge warns that emancipation will make Avery a legal adult, responsible for herself and held to adult standards, but after everything Avery has endured in recent weeks, Avery accepts the consequences. The ruling is granted, ending Avery's legal childhood.
Outside the courthouse, Alisa congratulates Avery while Oren's security team shields Avery from paparazzi. Alisa frames the victory in practical terms, noting that Avery can now write her own will, but Avery recognizes that Alisa has been carefully managing public perception and wants the world to believe the law firm remains in control. Avery privately understands that adulthood gives her far more power than that.
Three hours later, Avery finds Jameson on the roof with the familiar knife. Avery tells Jameson that Avery met Toby face-to-face, that Toby has a daughter, and that the daughter is not Avery but looks like Emily Laughlin. Jameson is intrigued, and Avery prepares to take an emotional risk rather than retreat into fear.
Avery shows Jameson a coin and admits that Toby took the disk, meaning they may never know what it contained. Jameson answers that Hawthorne House will always hold another mystery, revealing again how deeply he loves the house and its secrets. Avery recognizes that she shares that hunger for risk, puzzles, and discovery.
Avery uses the coin to propose a meaningful kiss: heads means Jameson kisses Avery, tails means Avery kisses Jameson. As the coin turns, Avery reflects on finding Toby, learning her mother's secret, and understanding more about why Tobias Hawthorne chose her, while accepting that more mysteries remain. The coin lands on tails, and Avery kisses Jameson, choosing boldness and acknowledging that this is not a game but a beginning.
