Epilogue

Overview

Sazed reflects on why Preservation chose Vin and honors her worthiness. In the remade world, Spook, Breeze, Beldre, and others emerge from storage caverns to green fields and discover Vin and Elend dead among flowers. Sazed’s book and note explain his remaking, preserved knowledge, and Spook’s new Mistborn status and leadership role.

Summary

Sazed opens by meditating on Vin’s uniqueness: Preservation chose her young, and she likely drew on the mists intermittently when not wearing her earring. He posits the Well’s power attuned her to accept the mists and credits her early, partial use of Preservation when she killed the Lord Ruler. He honors Vin as the most worthy among those who held the power.

Spook awakens in a packed cavern of Urteau refugees, suddenly healed. With Beldre and Breeze, he climbs to the surface, expecting devastation. Instead, they find a bright blue sky and vast green grass—an unfamiliar, gentle world. Breeze quips about Vin’s involvement as they explore in awe.

Across the meadow, more survivors emerge from multiple trapdoors: soldiers from Fadrex, civilians, and Ham, who reunites with his family. General Demoux reports seeing the Survivor in the sky as the land transformed, corroborating Sazed’s promise of deliverance. Spook notices the exits form a pattern and leads the group toward its center.

They arrive at a field of flowers, like the one Vin once carried in a picture. At the center lie Vin and Elend, hand in hand, dead—Vin in her mistcloak, Elend in white. Amid the flowers Spook finds a leather tome beginning, “I am, unfortunately, the Hero of Ages,” and a note from Sazed.

Sazed’s note explains he remade the world but could not restore souls despite repairing bodies; Vin and Elend are content where they are. He provides a concise record and a larger cache of books copied from his metalminds to preserve knowledge. He praises Spook’s message via Goradel, anticipates Spook’s leadership, and reveals he has healed Spook and made him Mistborn at Kelsier’s request, hinting at two still-unknown metals. Spook pockets the note, steadies himself, and chooses hope.
