Chapter 62

Overview

Sazed tends to the gravely injured Spook and completes his survey of religions, falling into despair. A chance title from TenSoon triggers a revelation: the kandra First Generation are Rashek’s Terris companions, preserving true Terris teachings. Renewed, Sazed resolves to visit the Homeland with TenSoon as looming catastrophe approaches.

Summary

Sazed checks on the unconscious, severely burned Spook in Urteau. Beldre keeps vigil, expressing confidence and love, while Sazed confirms Spook is not a Pewterarm and notes Quellion has grown more conciliatory after recent events. Sazed remains suspicious but moves on to his own burdens.

Returning to his quarters, Sazed finishes reviewing his last ten religions, concluding that all are inconsistent and unsupported, especially in explaining the Lord Ruler’s triumph over the faithful. Overwhelmed by grief for Tindwyl and meaninglessness, he contemplates burning his research, seeing belief as betrayal and emptiness as safer than failed divinity.

Hearing Breeze and TenSoon outside, Sazed wrestles with memory and doubt. TenSoon readies to depart to find Vin, and Breeze bids him farewell, calling Sazed the “Announcer.” The word jolts Sazed; he consults his tome and realizes Ruin altered the prophecies—“Holy Witness” was retrofitted to manipulate them.

Sazed confronts TenSoon about the ancient prophecies. TenSoon highlights a long-ignored question: what became of Rashek’s Terris companions? He reveals the Lord Ruler transformed all Feruchemists into mistwraiths but spared his friends, returning their sentience with Hemalurgy as the kandra First Generation, trading their Feruchemy—and humanity—for immortality.

This means the original Terris faith survives in living memory, not just mutable texts. Sazed’s despair breaks; he finds renewed purpose to seek truth from the First Generation. TenSoon invites him to the kandra Homeland en route to Vin, and Sazed hastily packs, accepting the journey as TenSoon warns that the end has arrived.
