His senses, long overreliant on flared tin, feel muted, and his tin reserves and belt pouch are gone. Flames close in as he crawls through smoke-choked halls, following an insistent, trusted voice.

The voice steers Spook away from boarded windows and up the stairs to a study, promising survival if he obeys. As the fire consumes the building, Spook finds vials in a desk. Expecting tin and despairing when none appears, he is commanded to burn what he did ingest.

To his shock, Spook feels a new metal reserve and ignites pewter. Strength floods his body, steadying his limbs and clearing his dizziness despite the grievous wound. The figure in the flames resolves into Kelsier, who claims to have given Spook the “blessing of pewter.”

Kelsier’s apparition outlines an escape—smash through boards to a nearby roof while soldiers focus on containing the blaze—and makes the rescue conditional on purpose. He urges Spook not only to live but to exact revenge on those who orchestrated the arson, pushing Spook toward decisive, violent action in Urteau.
