Chapter 58
Overview
Spook’s coup in Urteau erupts into uncontrolled riots. Beldre exposes herself as a Coinshot, proving Quellion’s hypocrisy, while the "Kelsier" urging Spook to kill is revealed as Ruin exploiting a hemalurgic shard in Spook.
Spook rejects Ruin, removes the spike—losing pewter—then charges through flames to trigger Sazed’s floodgates, racing to save the city.
Summary
Sazed completes a mechanism to drop floodgates and refill Urteau’s canals, assigning soldiers to trigger it. Spook plans to use the spectacle and Quellion’s public speech to discredit the Citizen and seize control without panicking the populace.
At the rally, citywide unrest ignites. Spook assaults the stage, defeats guards, and targets Quellion, intending to force an Allomantic display that would brand the Citizen a hypocrite. Instead, a hidden Thug engages Spook, and then a coin strikes Spook from the crowd—thrown by Beldre, revealing she, not Quellion, is the Allomancer. The planted crowd turns on her, exposing Quellion’s duplicity.
The apparition of “Kelsier” presses Spook to kill Beldre with a steel spike to gain her power. Spook notices Quellion bears a bronze spike and realizes he himself still carries a steel shard from an earlier injury. When Spook rips Quellion’s spike free, the apparition screams; Spook then cuts out his own shard, severing Ruin’s influence and losing his pewter. Exhaustion and pain crash down, and he sees the city truly burning, not rebelling.
Regaining clarity with flared tin, Spook resolves to save Urteau. He orders Quellion to face the people and help form brigades, while Sazed is sent to release the floodwaters. But the Ministry building sheltering the mechanism is engulfed in flames, blocking access. Accepting his limits yet refusing to flee, Spook douses his tin to numb himself, charges through the inferno, reaches the lever in the cache, and throws it.
Collapsed and burned, Spook succeeds in triggering the floodgates, setting the city to receive the canal waters and offering a chance to quench the fires. Part Four ends with his sacrifice and the hope of salvation for Urteau.
