She surveys a surprisingly large, orderly city with occupied noble homes and even Luthadel-style keeps. Her observations and memories of past balls stir reflections on change, responsibility, and the loss of earlier innocence.

Following Cett’s lead, Vin visits the noble informant Slowswift. Initially refusing to betray Lord Yomen, Slowswift softens when Vin argues that the world’s collapse makes stasis untenable. He explains Yomen’s strength: restoring familiar order—food distribution, factories, mines, and even balls—to stabilize Fadrex, and notes Yomen’s sincere belief in the Lord Ruler.

Pressed for vulnerabilities, Slowswift cites Yomen’s unwavering faith—potentially a flaw if misplaced—and his unexplained wealth, far beyond typical Ministry funds. Vin connects this to the hidden atium cache. She compensates Slowswift and departs.

Seeking a second source, Vin locates the beggar informant Hoid but, unsettled by instinct, declines to approach. Continuing her reconnaissance, she confirms the Canton of Resource complex as Yomen’s bustling palace—also the probable location of the Lord Ruler’s supply cache—and resolves not to attempt infiltration yet.

As she moves to exit the city, Vin detects a Mistborn tail burning copper, then the pulses abruptly cease when she accelerates. Troubled, she considers that the follower might instead be the elusive mist spirit, distinct from Ruin, and decides to withdraw to Elend’s camp to report and plan.
