Chapter 18
Overview
An epigraph credits Rashek with saving the world, though imperfectly. Sazed, traveling with Breeze, Allrianne, and Captain Goradel, releases their last horse and struggles with despair while studying religions. After witnessing Elend’s emergency farming efforts, Sazed splits from the group, visits the Terris settlement at the Pits of Hathsin, and is hailed as king—an honor he pointedly refuses.
Summary
The epigraph reflects on Rashek’s legacy: he created new problems while fixing old ones, yet ultimately saved the world and, unlike later actors, did not release Ruin.
On the road, Sazed frees the group’s last starving horse, viewing it as a grim symbol. He refuses the comfort of Breeze and Allrianne’s soldier-pulled carriage, choosing to walk with Captain Goradel’s two hundred soldiers. Burdened by doubt after meeting Vin and Elend, Sazed blames his teachings for Vin’s hard choices and seeks solace in religious study as they march through deepening ash.
Entering the Central Dominance, the column passes emergency farms Elend has organized. Sazed sees fragility and futility, while Goradel sees hope in skaa labor motivated by survival rather than coercion. They plan a resupply at Luthadel; Sazed announces he will separate and rejoin later on the northern highway.
Sazed then travels alone to the Pits of Hathsin, now a Terris refuge. The valley’s existing infrastructure and hardy scrub grazing support their herds, leaving the Terris comparatively better off than many. Elders in steward robes greet Sazed warmly, some calling him “Your Majesty.” Sazed rejects the title, accepting hospitality but refusing implied kingship.
