Chapter 16

The chapter opens with a note on Allomantic savants, emphasizing the peril and power of tin savants. Spook awakens in near-darkness, using a blindfold and wax plugs to manage his hypersensitive senses. Despite the risk, he resolves to continue burning tin to protect Urteau’s people and gathers his gear to work in daylight.

In Marketpit, Spook and the beggar-thief Durn observe Quellion’s regime. A prisoner procession arrives; Quellion has them locked in a mansion and burned, calling it justice against lingering nobility. Spook is horrified, recognizing the populace’s fear beneath the Citizen’s rhetoric and recalling how Kelsier’s hopeful words have been twisted into hatred.

After the execution, Quellion tours the market to “bless” the crowd. Spook maneuvers close to Beldre, Quellion’s guarded sister, and discreetly challenges her about the murders. He reveals his connection to Kelsier and warns he intends to stop her brother. Beldre does not raise an alarm, but Quellion notices them together and calls out.

Soldiers close in. Spook fights with a dueling cane and, guided by his tin-enhanced senses, incapacitates several foes. When he seizes a fallen sword, the blade is mysteriously halted—Quellion is Allomantically Pushing, exposing himself as a Coinshot. Spook drops the weapon and attempts to flee.

A supposedly downed soldier grabs Spook with inhuman strength, revealing himself as a Thug. Another soldier ruthlessly impales his comrade to reach Spook, the blow snapping the blade but driving steel into Spook’s chest. Realizing Quellion employs hidden Allomancers, Spook staggers, the pain finally crashing over him as he collapses into unconsciousness.
