Chapter 60

The epigraph explains that Preservation created Ruin’s prison by sacrificing his consciousness, leaving his power in the world for humans to use. Once freed, Ruin began isolating Preservation’s remnant. Preservation trusted mankind, despite repeated disappointments.

In Fadrex, Vin decides the best deception is to meet expectations. She stages an apparent escape from her silver-fitted cell: disarming hazekiller guards with a wooden staff, greasing her wrists with gruel, and hurling silver screws as a fake Steelpush. She rushes Yomen, aiming for the atium on his brow, but Yomen sidesteps by burning atium. Recognizing the trap, Vin yields as guards resecure her.

Yomen convenes obligators and questions Vin about her invasion motives and the Survivor’s Church. Vin frankly recounts killing the Lord Ruler and Sazed’s theory of compounded immortality. Yomen refuses to accept the Lord Ruler’s death, proposing instead that the Lord Ruler orchestrated events and still lives. Ruin, unseen by others, needles Vin about her unease with being worshipped.

Pressed by Yomen’s theology, Vin realizes her discomfort: she has acted as the Lord Ruler’s heir in function—seizing power and forging an empire—rather than as Kelsier’s successor. She deduces Yomen won’t execute her until he reconciles her role with his belief. When she pushes this leverage, Yomen uses atium-predicted movements to pin her, warning she is still in danger.

Yomen demands Vin tell Elend to withdraw, arguing that if they are altruistic, they will let him use the cache’s food to feed his people. Vin counters with the broader purpose of the caches. When she cites atium as a reason to take Fadrex, Yomen dismisses atium as worthless in a starving world, asserting food is the true resource and the atium merely useful to restrain her. He orders guards to remove her, resolved to discern the Lord Ruler’s intended next step.
