Chapter 33

Overview

TenSoon’s trial culminates in a harsh sentence, despite his plea that the First Generation prepare for global catastrophe and the Resolution. Exploiting his wolfhound form, TenSoon cripples KanPaar and flees the Homeland. His escape preserves a key ally for Vin while exposing deep kandra inertia and division.

Summary

The chapter opens with a note explaining Hemalurgy’s destructive nature: it transfers powers at a loss, aligning with Ruin’s purpose.

TenSoon is paraded from his cage to the Trustwarren, where a vast audience of kandra—older orthodox and younger extreme forms—regard him with disdain. Wearing the wolfhound bones Vin gave him, TenSoon feels renewed resolve. He addresses the First Generation directly, warning that the world is collapsing—mists, ash, quakes—and urges them to be ready to enact the Resolution to preserve life.

Breaking precedent, a weary First speaks only to permit proceedings, disappointing TenSoon. KanPaar pronounces TenSoon’s sentence: ritual imprisonment (ChanGaar) for ten generations, then execution by starvation, citing rebellion and endangering the First Contract.

As guards raise mallets, TenSoon uses his canine body’s speed and his long-honed musclecraft to spring into action. He crashes into KanPaar, shattering the Second’s crystalline True Body, then vaults through the stunned crowd. With practiced leaps—though lacking the Blessing of Potency—he clears the doorway, evades pursuit, and sprints into the Homeland’s corridors, abandoning home and the last of his honor to escape.

Enforcers with the Blessing of Potency, tasked to beat and imprison TenSoon, but outpaced by his sudden escape.
  • Kandra Audience
Crowd across generations; swayed by propaganda to scorn TenSoon, shocked as he disrupts the judgment and flees.
