Chapter 74
Overview
An epigraph reveals Ruin chose Vin because her circumstances enabled a bronze-enhancing spike to locate the Well. At dawn without mists, Elend surveys a decimated battlefield, notes worsening ash and heat, and organizes relief and evacuation.
Trusting Vin, Elend departs Fadrex to find her. Yomen admits he is an atium Misting and gives Elend his last bead, strengthening their alliance and spotlighting hidden Allomantic secrets.
Summary
The epigraph explains Ruin selected Vin not for temperament but because her unique situation—mistborn with an insane mother and a Seeker sister—let him craft a Hemalurgic spike that heightened her bronze, enabling her to sense the Well of Ascension. Even Ruin did not grasp all reasons behind this choice.
At dawn, the mists do not appear. Elend Venture surveys the slaughter before Fadrex, where koloss and human corpses lie beneath heavy ash. He puzzles over why the koloss retreated and notes a troubling rise in heat despite darkened skies, concluding conditions are worsening in new, unexpected ways.
Acting to preserve survivors, Elend orders Yomen to form search crews, recover the wounded, move the populace into the storage cavern, and keep soldiers ready for unknown threats. Elend then resolves to leave Fadrex to find Vin, trusting she diverted the koloss and holds critical knowledge.
Before Elend departs, Yomen acknowledges misjudging him. Affirming his faith in the Lord Ruler, Yomen nevertheless aids Elend by revealing he is an atium Misting—a Seer—and by giving Elend his last bead of atium. The revelation hints at guarded Allomantic secrets. Elend instructs Ham, then launches east using horseshoes, determined to reunite with Vin.
