Chapter 81

Overview

Vin, holding Preservation’s power, cannot outmuscle Ruin but buys time as refugees enter the Homeland. Elend realizes Demoux’s sickened men are atium Mistings, arms them, and they expend the entire atium cache holding back koloss. Marsh kills Elend, but Vin uses her grief to fuse with and pull Ruin into oblivion, erasing both minds.

Summary

Authorial notes reveal that in ancient days the mists Snapped people because Preservation’s mind was diminished; Ruin strengthened the mists, creating the Deepness. This frames the present conflict of equal, opposing powers.

Vin confronts Ruin while overseeing the evacuation to the kandra caverns, realizing Ruin commands hundreds of thousands of koloss and that her earlier victories were stalling tactics. She tests direct attack but learns their powers are balanced opposites.

In the Trustwarren, Sazed warns Elend that atium will draw Ruin. With only hundreds of defenders and four entrances, Elend connects Demoux’s prolonged “mist sickness” to atium Allomancy. He distributes beads, creating an army of atium Mistings and rallies them to buy time for the refugees.

Outside, Elend and the atium Mistings fight with impossible foresight, slaughtering koloss while Vin blocks Ruin’s interference. As hours pass, metals wane and soldiers fall. Marsh arrives burning atium; Elend, nearly spent, is briefly refueled by Vin’s touch, then burns duralumin with atium, glimpses decisive knowledge, and impales Marsh—but Marsh heals and decapitates Elend.

Within the caverns, koloss breach under Ruin’s control, but when Human reaches the Trustwarren, the atium cache is gone—the Mistings have burned it all. Elend dies declaring victory because Ruin’s body (atium) is destroyed. Vin, serene in loss, chooses creation’s paradox: she drives Preservation’s power into Ruin, using her willingness to destroy to protect. She merges with Ruin and pulls both minds into nothingness.
