Summary
An opening note explains Rashek’s error: he moved the planet too close to the sun, then created ashmounts to cool the world and redden the sun.
In Lekal City, Sazed studies the Canzi religion, identifying logical contradictions about bodies as divine artworks versus punishments, and rejects it as untrue. He reflects on his mission to evaluate all pre-Ascension faiths after Tindwyl’s death.
Waiting with Breeze for King Lekal’s decision on Elend’s treaty, Sazed wrestles with Terris independence, his role as chief ambassador, and his growing atheism. Breeze defends the political necessity of pressuring Lekal and gently insists Sazed will find belief again.
Sazed recalls removing and storing away his metalminds after surviving Marsh’s attack, fearing Feruchemy may die with him. Breeze thanks Sazed for past support, but Sazed remains hollow with grief.
The tension resolves when an aide delivers the signed treaty: King Lekal yields to Elend, bringing Lekal City under the New Empire.
