Overview
An epigraph reflects on the intoxicating knowledge of holding vast power without the wisdom to use it well. In the Homeland, TenSoon languishes in a pit for breaking a Contract and revealing a vital kandra secret. The Second Generation attempts to execute him with acid, offering only a skull per law. TenSoon swiftly forms a mouth and demands Judgment, compelling a public trial that threatens to expose his revelations to all kandra.
Summary
An opening epigraph describes the sensation of wielding immense power: it grants instant knowledge of its uses, but not the wisdom or practiced experience to apply it safely, highlighting the gulf between knowing and doing.
In the kandra Homeland, TenSoon endures near-total confinement in a grated stone pit. Lacking a skeleton, he exists as malleable muscle-mass, relying on a rudimentary sense of taste-touch to perceive his surroundings. Sustained by the Blessing of Presence, TenSoon resists madness while reflecting on his crimes: breaking a Contract that led to his master’s death and, far worse, revealing a critical kandra secret that could reduce his people to enslaved automatons.
As guards approach, hooks haul TenSoon from the pit. He recognizes the pungent sting of acid, understanding the Second Generation has chosen execution while technically honoring the First Contract by providing a skull to allow a final statement. Drawing on extensive field experience, TenSoon works with desperate speed, wrapping the skull, forming skin, lungs, and a crude tongue even as acid sears his exposed flesh.
Before he is dissolved, TenSoon croaks “Judgment!” invoking his right to a public trial. A nearby voice—aligned with the Second Generation—urges him to accept death quietly for the good of the people, warning a trial will only worsen his legacy. TenSoon, knowing a trial offers no hope of acquittal, nonetheless repeats his demand, choosing exposure and consequence over a secret death.
