Chapter 76

Vin awakens disembodied over Luthadel, suffused with immense power akin to what she once held at the Well. Recognizing Ruin as a bodiless, sentient storm of darkness, she understands she now embodies Preservation. Her view expands to the entire world, revealing mass extinction underway and many humans sheltering in vast caverns—the Lord Ruler’s intended refuges.

Driven to act, Vin smothers the ashmounts and wipes the skies, but the unfiltered sun scorches the land. She spins the planet to bring darkness, disrupting weather and raising a devastating tsunami. Each attempt to intervene is opposed by Ruin, who demonstrates their equilibrium: every action is countered, leaving both gods stalemated while people die below.

Rejecting Ruin’s fatalism, Vin discerns he misrepresents “kindness” to prevent her from learning precision with the power. She notices brilliant flares across the world—metal—and concludes metal anchors and resists their influence. Ruin recounts Preservation’s “sacrifice” in creating humanity, which left an imbalance that favored Ruin.

Following this, Vin realizes they are only matched now because a portion of Ruin’s power is hidden: atium. If Ruin regains it, balance breaks and destruction becomes inevitable. She also perceives Ruin’s long game: whispering Hemalurgy to Rashek while Rashek held Preservation, spawning koloss and Inquisitors as future servants.

As Vin maintains a wary blockade against Ruin’s direct actions, she sees koloss herding toward Luthadel. In the skies, a new movement draws her focus—Elend approaching the city on brilliant Allomantic lines—signaling an imminent convergence of mortal and divine struggles.
