Chapter 49

The chapter opens with a reflection explaining why Ruin could not use Inquisitors to seize Preservation’s power at the Well: they were too bound to the Lord Ruler, and removing their spikes to take the power would kill them, so Ruin needed an untainted, manipulable agent.

In Urteau’s hidden cavern, Sazed studies the underground reservoir and determines the Lord Ruler merely widened natural inlets. He concludes that blocking those inlets will refill the city’s canals and uses his copperminds to retrieve engineering knowledge, calculating weights and mechanisms for wooden barriers.

Breeze visits, encouraging Sazed’s return to scholarship and counseling delegation to Spook. Sazed wrestles with guilt over leadership and grief for Tindwyl but accepts that research suits him. They discuss Spook’s growing influence and image among the people, with Breeze likening it—cautiously—to Kelsier’s legend.

Spook, exhausted and wary that Quellion hasn’t attacked, outlines the Citizen’s bully tactics and explains how he seized power by exploiting the mists, even spreading the idea that nobles were immune to mistsickness. He orders vigilance while Sazed prepares to begin construction.

Captain Goradel brings Beldre, Quellion’s sister, who pleads for her brother’s life. Outside, Breeze, Allrianne, and Sazed assess her as frightened, pampered, and naive. Spook returns, decides to hold her, and proposes spreading a rumor that she defected to their side, leveraging witnesses to her voluntary entry to damage Quellion’s legitimacy.

The scene closes with Beldre protesting the deceit and invoking the Survivor, while Spook insists Kelsier would approve, revealing his strategic ruthlessness and intent to force Quellion’s hand or sway public opinion.
