Summary
The epigraph clarifies Ruin’s strategy in Fadrex. Rather than immediately sending Inquisitors, Ruin conserved resources, tried and failed to spike Yomen, then dispatched another pawn to verify whether the atium was truly in the city, wary that the Lord Ruler’s caches might be a deliberate deception.
In Urteau, Spook emerges from painful, confused unconsciousness to find Breeze and Beldre at his bedside. He is immobilized in casts and bandages per Sazed’s orders, his body seared by burns from the recent inferno. Breeze and Beldre report that Urteau largely survived: the canals flooded, fire brigades worked, and most destroyed buildings were empty.
Spook immediately asks after Sazed and learns Sazed has departed south with Vin’s kandra. Observing thickening ash and an influx of refugees—even from Luthadel—Spook insists he must warn Vin. He explains that the being released at the Well of Ascension manipulated both him and the Citizen, seeking to claim Urteau.
Though Breeze urges rest, Captain Goradel volunteers to carry the message, citing the debt he owes Vin for sparing him and turning him from the Survivor’s mob. Recognizing the danger of Ruin’s eavesdropping, Spook orders a thin metal sheet and a stylus, insisting the warning be written in steel and never spoken aloud.
