Overview
An epigraph recalls Kelsier’s secret Eleventh Metal and the doubt it sowed. In fevered delirium, Spook relives his childhood: his skaa community nearly kills him until Clubs buys his freedom and takes him to Luthadel. Spook names himself Lestibournes—“abandoned”—foreshadowing his identity and loyalty to the crew.
Summary
The chapter opens with a reflection on Kelsier’s mysterious Eleventh Metal. The rumor, discovered during his unknown years “in the West,” confused the crew and planted early doubts about his leadership despite his confidence.
The narrative shifts years before the Collapse, in the eastern skaa settlements. A young Spook lies pinned in a shack as his skaa neighbors debate his fate, fearing discovery by obligators and Inquisitors and suspecting dangerous “problems” in his family. Spook’s father, Jedal, presses a boot to Spook’s throat, calling him a mistwraith and rejecting him.
A bag of coins spills onto the floor, interrupting the execution. A gnarled, limping man—Clubs—offers the wealth in exchange for the boy and warns he will inform obligators if refused, forcing the room to relent. Spook’s mother, Margel, remains silent but complicit; Jedal chooses the money over his son.
Clubs leads Spook out into the red sunlight, intending to take him to Luthadel. Rejecting his old identity, the boy names himself Lestibournes—street slang for “I’ve been abandoned.”
In a later note, it is explained that Kelsier would rename him “Spook,” cementing his new life with the crew and revealing the roots of his loyalty and resilience.
