As the sky reddens and ash deepens, he wrestles with helplessness before the world’s collapse—ashmount eruptions, smothered land, and the seeming futility of their efforts without Vin’s impossible leaps.

Overwhelmed, Elend kneels and emotionally concedes defeat—until the mist spirit appears beside him. Remembering its prior interventions, he tries to communicate. When the spirit scratches words that read as threats, Elend deduces that another force is altering written messages. He concludes Ruin is present and can rewrite text, forcing the spirit to rely on gestures.

Elend conducts a yes/no interrogation. The spirit indicates it is far weaker than Ruin. It confirms Ruin causes the ashfalls, while the daytime mists are only partly linked to the spirit. When Elend asks about destinations, the spirit gives a tentative yes to going east (perhaps Luthadel) and vigorously signals not to attack Fadrex City.
