An epigraph reflects on Ruin’s precise, long-laid timing: the Lord Ruler’s fall before the Well’s return, and Ruin’s subsequent freedom.

In the dark cavern, the stone door grinds open. Vin immediately downs her last vial, vaults to the exit, and attempts to escape via the ladder. A trapdoor blocked by a heavy stone denies her, and broken rungs force her back among a handful of intimidated workers and a single, composed nobleman.

The nobleman is Telden Hasting, an old friend of Elend’s. He sets chairs, offers two wines—one drugged—and explains the stalemate: the trapdoor cannot be opened from below, and violence or threats will not compel cooperation from above. Vin tests emotional Allomancy, but Telden remains calm and candid, noting Yomen is present topside and will detect coercion.

Telden argues that waiting means starvation and that only the sedative will permit safe removal. Vin weighs grim options: futile force that expends her last metals, or submission for a chance to act later. She decides to gamble on Allomantic resilience.

Vin drinks the drugged wine, feigns drowsiness, then burns duralumin with pewter, momentarily clearing the sedation. The surge fades with the duralumin, her pewter drops, and the drug overwhelms her. She collapses, securing Yomen’s control while Telden and the workers prepare to extract her.
